Canada concerned about civil unrest in Haiti

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement on the current situation in Haiti:

“Canada is very concerned about the recent civil unrest in Haiti and is deeply saddened by the loss of life. We wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and injured Haitians.

“While peaceful protests are part of a healthy democracy, politically motivated acts of violence have no place in the democratic process. We call on all parties to work toward finding a solution.

“Canada is a long-standing partner of Haiti. Together with the international community, we work closely with local stakeholders to promote inclusive governance, transparency, the rule of law and the fight against corruption, which are essential to foster trust, stability and sustainable development.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”
