Government welcomes Auditor General’s report on Canada’s missions abroad

Statement

November 20, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“As minister of foreign affairs, it is my priority to ensure the safety and security of our Canadian diplomats and employees, as well as our local staff and diplomatic missions around the world.

“I thank the Auditor General and his staff for their 2018 Fall Report and their recommendations, which are in line with our renewed commitment to safety at our missions abroad.

“In October 2017, the Government of Canada announced $1.8 billion in funding to strengthen security measures at our embassies, high commissions and consulates. This much-needed funding has already enabled Global Affairs Canada to make crucial investments in security, infrastructure upgrades, emergency readiness and training programs. It will also allow the full implementation of the report’s recommendations.

“I agree with the Auditor General’s recommendations, and I am pleased to see the report recognizes that, in the past year, Global Affairs Canada has taken important steps to strengthen its security measures internationally. This has included upgrades such as airlocks and reinforced entrances, new blast protections and increased guard patrols, as well as new and stringent project management requirements.

“I would also like to thank the Auditor General for recognizing the hard work of the many people, including security staff, who allow us to continue advancing Canadian interests and values all around the world.”
