Readout of Foreign Affairs Minister and National Defence Minister’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Secretary of Defense

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, today met with Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, and James Mattis, U.S. Secretary of Defense. It was an opportunity to discuss key foreign policy, defence and security issues of shared interest while strengthening the bilateral relationship between Canada and the United States.

The discussion covered a range of topics, including China, Russia and Ukraine, the importance of NATO, Global Coalition efforts to defeat Da’esh in Iraq and Syria, Venezuela, Nicaragua and security on the Korean Peninsula. The two Ministers also raised U.S. Section 232 tariffs imposed against steel and aluminum imports from Canada and expressed their disappointment that these illegal and unjustified tariffs have not yet been lifted.
