Canada facilitates meeting between CARICOM countries and Venezuela representatives

Statement

March 26, 2019 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

"We all have an obligation to support the Venezuelan people in their struggle for freedom. No one should be denied democracy and human rights.

"This is an international crisis and it warrants an international response from countries in the hemisphere.

“As a result of these recent discussions, Canada hosted a meeting on March 23, 2019, in Barbados between members of CARICOM, Juan Guaidó, interim president of Venezuela, who joined via video conference, and his representatives, who attended the meeting in person.”

"This weekend's meeting was an important step in a continued dialogue.”
