Readout: Minister Champagne speaks to his US counterpart

Today, Minister Champagne spoke to his US counterpart, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The two Ministers began by speaking about the tragic crash of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752. Secretary Pompeo expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the Canadians who died.

The Ministers discussed the intelligence that indicates that the plane was likely shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, perhaps unintentionally. Secretary Pompeo offered the US government’s full assistance in the ongoing investigation.

Finally, the Ministers discussed the situation in Iraq, Iran and the region. Minister Champagne emphasized the need for a de-escalation in tensions and reiterated Canada’s commitment to peace, stability and prosperity for the people of Iraq.

Both Ministers agreed to remain in close touch as this situation continues to evolve.
