Minister of Foreign Affairs condemns Alexei Navalny poisoning

Statement

September 2, 2020 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Canada is deeply troubled by new reports from experts in Germany who concluded that Alexei Navalny, a prominent political opposition figure in Russia, was poisoned by a nerve agent of the Novichok group like the one used in the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, UK in March 2018.

“We strongly condemn this outrageous attack. Russian authorities must explain what happened so that those responsible may be held to account without delay. The use of chemical weapons is abhorrent and unacceptable.

“Canada and the international community will continue to stand with Mr. Navalny and his family in their search for answers and justice.”
