Yesterday, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, spoke with Juan Carlos Jobet, Chile’s Minister of Energy and Mining, following this month’s Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada 2021 Virtual Convention.
The ministers discussed the importance of international cooperation in the mining sector, as well as the participation of underrepresented groups in the industry, including women. Minister Ng highlighted Canada’s close relations with Chile, noted that Canada is the largest foreign investor in its mining sector, and underlined the countries’ work to support a robust rules-based international trading system.
The ministers agreed to encourage further dialogue on the critical role clean technology has played in the mining sector’s transformation toward a more sustainable future.
Minister Ng noted that she looks forward to further advancing relations between Canada and Chile through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. The ministers also discussed the role mining will play in generating inclusive growth and creating jobs as the world looks ahead to a global economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and how Canada and Chile can work together to ensure everyone benefits from trade.
