Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs on Commonwealth Day

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Canada is proud to be a partner in the Commonwealth of Nations, and we believe the Commonwealth can be a force for good in the world. Together with the other 53 states that make up this community, we work to advance democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, diversity and inclusion to the benefit of every person who calls a Commonwealth country home.

“Canada is committed to strong and sustained engagement in the Commonwealth and will continue to work with its members for a more just and prosperous future for all.”

Quick facts

  • The modern Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 54 countries, of which most have historic links with the United Kingdom.
  • Canada joined the modern Commonwealth in 1949 and has played an important role in its evolution.
