Statement by Foreign Affairs Minister on Peru presidential elections results

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Canada congratulates Pedro Castillo on his election as the next president of Peru and commends the work of the Peruvian electoral authorities for ensuring a free, fair and transparent vote.

“We look forward to working with President-elect Castillo and his administration to continue to deepen our strong bilateral relationship as we further our efforts to overcome the pandemic and generate sustainable economic development for all.”

“We will continue to work on shared priorities, including promoting democracy, the rule of law, human rights and Indigenous rights, languages and culture, as well as supporting the global response to COVID-19.

“We also share a mutually beneficial trade and commercial partnership, in which important Canadian investments in Peru are contributing to the creation of employment and the development of human capital.”
