Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu to travel to Costa Rica

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Maninder Sidhu, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will travel to Costa Rica to represent Canada at the inauguration of president-elect Rodrigo Chaves on May 8, 2022.

Costa Rica is a strong ally of Canada on human rights, democracy, climate action, gender equality and trade. Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu looks forward to his meeting with president-elect Chaves, during which he intends to discuss Canada’s interest in collaborating with the Government of Costa Rica on shared priorities.

In addition, Parliamentary Secretary Sidhu will attend high-level meetings with partners on migration, democracy and inclusive economic growth. He will also engage in important discussions with representatives of UN agencies and civil society leaders on issues such as democracy, migration and regional stability.

Quick facts

  • Canada and Costa Rica enjoy strong and diverse bilateral relations. The 2 countries share similar views in many areas, including human rights, the rule of law, security and free trade, as well as on regional and international issues raised in multilateral institutions.

  • Canada supports Costa Rica’s security efforts through Global Affairs Canada’s (GAC’s) Anti-Crime Capacity Building Program (ACCBP). Since 2009, GAC has provided nearly $8 million in funding to Costa Rica for security programming through the ACCBP.

  • The entry into force of the Canada-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement in November 2002 enabled the development of trade relations between the 2 countries. Parallel agreements on environment and labour cooperation were also signed at that time.
