Minister Joly meets with Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Senator Penny Wong, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the margins of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

At their first in-person meeting, the ministers highlighted the deep relationship of the two countries, which is underpinned by shared values and multilateral collaboration such as in defence and security, trade, development, human rights and regional issues.

The ministers welcomed Indonesia’s inaugural presidency of the G20 this year. Both commended Indonesia for inviting Ukraine to participate as a guest.

The ministers reiterated their condemnation of Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. They pledged to work together to find a way for the G20 to address the war in Ukraine, continue their close cooperation on sanctions against Russia and provide economic, humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine.

The ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to combatting climate change and fostering sustainable economic growth, and to working closely together to promote regional stability and uphold the rules-based international order.

The ministers looked forward to strengthening the partnership between Canada and Australia on shared priorities, including gender equality, economic growth, and meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
