Backgrounder: Sanctions against Haitian political elites

Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against Haitian political elites in response to the egregious conduct of political elites who provide illicit financial support to armed gangs.

Canadian measures

The Special Economic Measures (Haiti) Regulations impose a prohibition on dealings related to listed individuals, effectively freezing any assets they may have in Canada.

The specific prohibitions are set out in the regulations.

The names of the individuals added to the schedule of these regulations are the following:

• Former Senator Youri Latortue (born on November 13, 1967)
• Senator Joseph Lambert (born on February 5, 1961)
