Minister Sajjan travels to Qatar to attend 2022 FIFA World Cup

November 20, 2022 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, will be in Qatar from November 21 to 23, 2022, for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Minister will be accompanied by Stephen Ellis, Member of Parliament for Cumberland-Colchester.

While in Qatar, Minister Sajjan will cheer on the Canadian men’s national soccer team in its opening match against Belgium. He will also participate in a trilateral sports diplomacy event with U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard and attend the opening of the World Cup’s Sustainable Development Goals pavilion.

Minister Sajjan will also meet with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss shared priorities, including humanitarian assistance and international development.

Quick facts

  • This is the first time that the Canadian men’s national soccer team has qualified for the World Cup since 1986.

  • Vancouver and Toronto were selected as host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Canada will host this event alongside Mexico and the United States.
