Backgrounder – Additional sanctions for Myanmar

Backgrounder

Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against the following individuals in relation to the coup perpetrated by Myanmar’s armed forces on February 1, 2021.  Canada is also imposing a new prohibition on the export, sale, supply or shipment of aviation fuel to the Myanmar military regime.

Canadian measures

The Special Economic Measures (Burma) Regulations impose on listed persons a prohibition on any transaction (effectively, an asset freeze) by prohibiting persons in Canada and Canadians outside Canada from engaging in any activity related to any property of these listed persons or providing financial or related services to them.

The specific prohibitions are set out in the regulations.

Targeted individuals are senior figures in the Myanmar military responsible for such international humanitarian and human rights law violations. The names of the individuals added to the schedule of these regulations are the following:

(1) Htein Win; (2) Htin Latt Oo; (3) Than Hteik; (4) Nyunt Win Swe; (5) Phone Myat; and (6) Thet Pon.
