Backgrounder
Kevin Hamilton (BA [International Relations], University of British Columbia, 1998; MA [International Affairs], Carleton University, 2000) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1999. Since 2020, he has been director general of the International Security Bureau. Prior to this appointment, he served for 4 years as ambassador to Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova, with residence in Bucharest. From 2013 to 2016, he was director of the Eastern Europe and Eurasia Division, where he was responsible for Canada’s political and trade relations with 19 European and Eurasian countries, spanning the Western Balkans to Central Asia. From 2010 to 2013, Mr. Hamilton served as chargé d’affaires in Lithuania and, concurrently, as non-resident deputy head of mission for Canada’s diplomatic missions in Estonia and Latvia. From 2007 to 2010, he was political counsellor at the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom. Other Headquarters assignments have included deputy director of the Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Group, deputy director of the Policy Planning Staff and senior adviser in the Office of the Special Ambassador for Mine Action, the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Division and the Western Balkans Directorate. Overseas, he has also served at Canada’s embassies in Tel Aviv and Sarajevo.
