Backgrounder

Maryse Guilbeault (BA Hons [German], McGill University, 1986) joined External Affairs and International Trade Canada in 1993. At Headquarters, she has worked in divisions focusing on relations with Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as on the human resources team in the Assignments Division. Abroad, she has worked at Canada’s embassies in Chile, Peru and Guatemala. Ms. Guilbeault was also Canada’s ambassador to El Salvador (2015 to 2019). More recently, Ms. Guilbeault was director of Official Events and Management Services at the Office of Protocol of Canada.

Andrew Turner (BA Hons [History], Carleton University, 1999; MA [International Affairs], Carleton University, 2001) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2002. At Headquarters, he has served in the Cabinet and Parliamentary Relations Division, Eastern and Southern Africa Relations Division, Muslim Communities Working Group and Middle East Relations Division. Overseas, he served at missions in Saudi Arabia (2004 to 2007), Syria (2011 to 2012), Afghanistan (2013 to 2015), Pakistan (2015 to 2017) and Iraq (2017 to 2019). He most recently served as deputy director and director of the Eastern Europe and Eurasia Division.
