The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York City, New York.

Minister Anand and Secretary General Rutte discussed threats and challenges facing NATO. Minister Anand highlighted Canada’s continuing solidarity with its Allies in countering Russia’s reckless and provocative incursions into NATO airspace.

Minister Anand emphasized Canada’s commitment to contributing to NATO and NORAD’s awareness of the threat environment across the Arctic region, including in the North American Arctic.

The Minister and the Secretary General also highlighted an agreement between Canada and NATO on the co-location of the NATO Liaison Office with the Canadian Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. The temporary arrangement was finalized on September 24 and serves as a pathway to a more permanent one.

In an increasingly unstable and unpredictable world, Canada is making the critical investments needed to keep Canadians safe, help protect its Allies, and strengthen its role on the world stage.
