The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that she will join Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of Canada’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Week in New York City, New York.
During High-Level Week, Minister Anand will engage with counterparts and participate in events on pressing global challenges affecting Canada and Canadians. The Minister will emphasize the importance of upholding the rules-based international order, which is essential to Canada’s economic prosperity and national security.
Minister Anand will co-host the UN Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti with Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, to mobilize much-needed resources and strengthen a coordinated international response to the crisis as the UN Security Council deliberates on the future role of the UN in Haiti.
Minister Anand will attend an event supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity amid Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and take the opportunity to reaffirm Canada’s support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
As Canada’s G7 presidency nears conclusion this fall, Minister Anand will host the G7 Foreign Ministers’ dinner to discuss key G7 priorities, including further support for Ukraine’s security, increased collective pressure on Russia, pathways to peace and stability in the Middle East and renewed security support to Haiti. Minister Anand will also reaffirm Canada’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment during the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Minister Anand will accompany Prime Minister Carney to the High-Level Segment of the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement on the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution on the margins of UNGA. This event will provide a platform for Canada and its international partners to coordinate efforts to address the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and advance prospects for a two-state solution, including through the recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Minister Anand will conclude her trip by delivering Canada’s national statement to the UN General Assembly on September 29, which will set out Canada’s foreign policy priorities and its approach to key geopolitical issues.
