Backgrounder
Eric Walsh (BA Hons [Political Science], McGill University, 1994) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1995. During his time at Headquarters, he worked in various positions, including as a negotiator for the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines (1996 and 1997). He has also served as coordinator, Middle East and North Africa (2003 to 2005); director, North Asia (2007 to 2010); and director general, North America (2018 to 2022).
Overseas, he was posted to Ankara (1998 to 2001); to Bucharest (2001 to 2003); as counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations and the Conference on Disarmament at Geneva (2005 to 2007); as minister and deputy head of mission in Berlin (2010 to 2015); as ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2015 to 2018); and, most recently, as high commissioner in Sri Lanka (2022 to 2025).
