The G7 GovAI Grand Challenge

Canada, as 2025 G7 President, launched the G7 GovAI Grand Challenge. With support from a G7 AI network (GAIN) of AI adoption experts, we launched the Grand Challenge to advance the responsible use of AI across public services worldwide.

Teams or individuals from G7 and EU countries were challenged to tackle real public sector challenges by developing practical, scalable AI solutions that can be adopted across governments.

About the Challenge

The Challenge was a two-week, intensive competition running from to .

Four specific challenges along with submission requirements were revealed on , kicking off a sprint of creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

The Challenge continues with judging, a showcase, and funding announcements to follow in !

What’s at stake

The G7 GovAI Grand Challenge offers up to $100,000 CAD in total funding to recognize practical, scalable AI solutions.

If selected, participants could receive up to $10,000 CAD to support their proposal which may also be chosen for further research and eventually deployed in a G7 country.

What we looked for:

Students, researchers, public servants, or parts of civil society, academia, or industry from G7 and EU countries interested or working in AI, policy, or interdisciplinary fields were welcomed to participate.

Canadian federal public servants are not eligible for funding, but could still submit an innovation for a chance to be recognized on our website. Want to keep innovating in government? Powered by the G7 AI Network (GAIN)

The GAIN, convened and chaired by Canada, strengthens international collaboration to ensure that AI solutions in government have measurable and real benefits for their communities. Among its early priorities, GAIN was launched to:

  • support Canada’s leadership of the G7 GovAI Grand Challenge
  • develop a roadmap to scale successful AI projects
  • create a catalogue of open-source and shareable AI solutions for G7 countries

Supported by the GAIN, the Challenge contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of public services by introducing trusted, innovative AI solutions into government with measurable, meaningful benefits for citizens.
