AC Crystal wheat to move to Canada Northern Hard Red class in 2019

News Release

July 28, 2016 – Winnipeg, Manitoba – Canadian Grain Commission

As of August 1, 2019, the Canadian Grain Commission will designate the wheat variety AC Crystal to the Canada Northern Hard Red class. Currently, this variety is in the Canada Prairie Spring Red wheat class.

This variety is moving to the Canada Northern Hard Red class because a review by the Canadian Grain Commission found that it did not meet revised quality parameters for its current designated class.

The Canadian Grain Commission reminds producers and the industry about upcoming wheat class and variety designation changes.

On August 1, 2016, two new wheat classes, Canada Northern Hard Red and Canada Western Special Purpose, take effect. The Canada Western Interim Wheat, Canada Western General Purpose, and Canada Western Feed wheat classes will be eliminated. Varieties in the Canada Western Interim Wheat class will be moved to the Canada Northern Hard Red class. Canada Western General Purpose varieties will move to the Canada Western Special Purpose class.

On August 1, 2018, twenty-five varieties of Canada Western Red Spring and four varieties of Canada Prairie Spring Red wheat will move to the Canada Northern Hard Red class.
