Administration and Consultation
WHMIS is implemented through coordinated and interlocking federal, provincial and territorial legislation. As this encompasses substantive involvement of key industry stakeholders, the WHMIS framework has two main committees:
- The Intergovernmental WHMIS Coordinating Committee (IWCC) is a forum for regulators from federal, provincial and territorial governments to exchange information and ideas related to WHMIS. In the spirit of intergovernmental cooperation, the IWCC focuses on policies, legislation and associated regulations to enhance worker protection through effective hazard communication.
- The WHMIS Current Issues Committee (CIC) consists of Health Canada officials and representatives of suppliers, employers, organized labour and the federal, provincial and territorial OHS regulatory agencies. The CIC serves as a forum for consultation on matters concerning the interpretation or modification of WHMIS. The CIC also facilitates information and knowledge-sharing between government regulators and affected stakeholders in order to improve coordination and collaboration in achieving compliance with WHMIS.
HMIRA Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC)
The HMIRA Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC) provides the Minister of Health with advice and assistance on matters related to the operation of the Act. With members appointed by the Minister, the HMIRA MAC is comprised of representatives of the federal, provincial and territorial governments as well as those from industry and labour.
