Major Recreation Infrastructure Investments in Quebec City

A federal-provincial-municipal investment of over $97 million

Quebec City, Quebec -  July 7, 2016

Families in Quebec City will have improved access to modern recreational facilities as a result of funding for a new Ice Centre and three community centres in Quebec City. The Ice Centre project will help attract international sports events in the provincial as well as make more recreational activities available to citizens of Quebec City, whereas the community centres will help maintain and enhance the delivery of recreational programs offered to local resident by the City.

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, François Blais, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, Minister Responsible for the National Capital Region, on behalf of Martin Coiteux, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Sébastien Proulx, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Minister of Families, Minister Responsible for the Gaspésie—Îles-de-la-Madeleine region and member for Jean-Talon, and Régis Labeaume, Mayor of Quebec City, announced a joint federal-provincial-municipal investment for these project totalling up to $97 million for the Ice Centre project as well as three community centres.

The Ice Centre project will have a seating capacity of about 2,000 people and comprise four ice rinks and a 400-metre-long speed skating oval. The other projects involve the redevelopment and expansion of the Centre communautaire des Chutes as well as construction of the Centre communautaire Mgr Marcoux in the Maizerets district and a community centre in the Saint-Roch district.

Quick facts

  • The Ice Centre Project, estimated at $68 million, is financed under the terms of the Major Infrastructure component of the Building Canada Fund:
    • Federal contribution: up to $22.9 million
    • Provincial contribution: up to $22.9 million
    • Municipal contribution: $22.2 million
  • The community centre projects are financed under the terms of the Major Infrastructure Component of the Building Canada Fund.
  • The total cost of the Centre communautaire des Chutes project is $4,380,500. Each level of government will contribute one-third of the total amount, that is, $1,460,167.
  • The total cost of the Centre communautaire Mgr Marcoux is $10 million. Each level of government will qcontribute one-third of the total amount, that is, $3,333,333.
  • The total cost of the Centre communautaire in the Saint-Roch district is $15 million. Each level of government will contribute one-third of the total amount, that is, $5 million.
