Statement by the Government of Canada on Bombardier

Statement

Ottawa, Ontario, February 17, 2016—The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, and the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, made the following statements:

"Today's announcement by Bombardier of a significant Air Canada order for the C Series is clearly good news for the Canadian aerospace industry. I am encouraged by the benefits that will result from this important transaction between these two iconic Canadian companies. However, I want to offer my thoughts to those workers across Canada who are affected by today's restructuring announcement from Bombardier. As with any news of this kind, the Government of Canada is concerned about the impact of job losses on employees and their families."

— Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport

"The Government remains committed to working with the aerospace industry across Canada to improve access to global markets and supply chains for one of the most innovative and export-driven industries in the country. The Government understands that Bombardier plays a major role in Canada's aerospace industry as the third largest civil aircraft producer in the world and a contributor of over $5.4 billion in GDP. We are continuing our dialogue with Bombardier on its request for federal assistance. Any action the Government takes with respect to Bombardier will be first and foremost in the interest of Canadians. We have been clear that such an important decision will only be made after due diligence, careful consideration and a strong business case."

— Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development
