Faster, more reliable Internet coming to Prince Edward Island

News Release

Project will increase high-speed Internet coverage across the Island

April 8, 2016 – Ottawa – Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

For most Canadians, access to affordable and reliable broadband networks is an important part of everyday life. However, communities outside urban centres often face challenges in accessing Internet service at levels comparable to those in cities due to factors such as remote location and challenging terrain.

Xplornet Communications Inc. is receiving up to $1.6 million from the Government of Canada to increase broadband Internet access for more than 12,000 households in communities throughout Prince Edward Island.

Canadians in all parts of the country need access to high-speed Internet to take advantage of new economic and business opportunities and to connect with friends and family in Canada and beyond.

This funding through the Connecting Canadians program will provide the communities with access to broadband at speeds of five megabits per second or more.

"Helping to extend high-speed Internet across the country is one of the most important infrastructure investments the Government of Canada can make to help unlock the tremendous potential of our country's northern and rural regions. By working with partners across the country, the Government is helping to deliver increased broadband coverage to underserved areas across Canada. This will provide Canadians with greater employment and business opportunities, better access to online education and e-health, improved communications and media, and increased access to online goods and services."

– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development

"With today's announced investment, 12,000 more households will have access to broadband Internet on Prince Edward Island. In today's modern economy, having this capability will allow Islanders to better access the vast amount of information and knowledge available, and it will help small businesses to succeed."

– The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Cardigan

"Access to the latest technology is critical to the success of residents and businesses throughout Prince Edward Island. Higher-speed Internet service across our province will support efforts to build for sustained prosperity."

– The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Prince Edward Island

"We are thrilled to work alongside the Government of Canada toward our shared goal of providing fast and affordable high-speed Internet service to rural Canadians. For rural communities in Prince Edward Island, we will be able to accelerate the build of our fixed wireless broadband infrastructure and deliver enhanced broadband service so that residents can experience everything the Internet has to offer."

– Bill Macdonald, Executive Vice-President of Business Development, Xplornet Communications Inc.
