Statement from Minister Bains following his visit to Windsor

Statement

March 29, 2019—Ottawa, Ontario

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, today made the following statement after spending the day in Windsor, Ontario:

“Today I met with representatives of Unifor and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). I toured the plant and spoke with many of the workers.

“I saw firsthand the impact on the workers and families of Windsor, of FCA’s decision to realign production with a drop in global sales.

“In my conversations, I assured workers that our government is behind them and will fight for their jobs.

“I also confirmed with the company that the Chrysler Pacifica will be eligible for the rebate of up to $5,000 for zero-emission vehicles announced in Budget 2019.

“Through the Innovation and Skills Plan, our government has invested $434 million in the automotive sector, leveraging investments worth nearly $6 billion and creating good jobs.

“Our government remains committed to being a strong strategic partner with FCA for the long term and, indeed, with all automotive manufacturers who are seeking to make full use of their Canadian plants.

“We remain strongly committed to doing everything we can to support Canadian auto workers and their jobs.”
