Backgrounder: Governments of Canada and British Columbia to bring high-speed Internet access and mobile connectivity to communities across the province
Backgrounder
On July 28, 2025, the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development), together with the Honourable Diana Gibson, British Columbia's Minister of Citizens' Services, announced funding to bring high-speed Internet access and mobile connectivity to communities across the province.
Here is an overview of British Columbia's connectivity status:
- As of July 2025, 95.8% of British Columbia households are connected to high-speed Internet (at least 50 megabits per second [Mbps] download / 10 Mbps upload).
- In 2017, 92.3% of British Columbia households were connected to high-speed Internet (at least 50 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload).
- In 2026, 97.8% of British Columbia households are projected to be connected to high-speed Internet (at least 50 Mbps download / 10 upload).
This funding is part of an existing agreement between the federal and provincial governments. The communities that will benefit from improved Internet speeds and mobile connectivity thanks to projects funded by the Government of Canada are as follows:
