17th Halloween Season on the Plains

September 27, 2016 – Québec – The National Battlefields Commission

For the 17th consecutive season, the Plains of Abraham, and the Joan of Arc Garden in particular, will be transformed into haunted settings where young and old will be invited to tremble with fear and … shake with laughter! From October 1 to November 6, the National Battlefields Commission will host a series of Halloween activities and a new addition, Tales of the Bad Old Days, intended for more daring adults. Some activities are free, others are offered at different rates.

  • New
    Tales of the Bad Old Days (adults). Shameful diseases, epidemics, stolen corpses, dubious hygiene and violent deaths are featured in true historic anecdotes shared through lively storytelling at Martello Tower 4. An incredible opportunity to discover the most enigmatic of the Martello towers!

October 29, 30; November 4, 5, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. At Martello Tower 4. Reservation required. Only in French. $10 / adults (ages 14 and older).

  • Decorations at the Garden (all ages). Mysterious decors and tombstones are reminders of the history of the Plains of Abraham. Learn about legends and realities experienced at the Park: drunkenness and temperance, public punishment, the white lady of Cap Diamant, the voices of Joan of Arc, the Sabbath, and the widow’s walk, but to name a few.

October 1 to November 6, daily. At the Joan of Arc Garden. Free.

  • Haunted Tower (families). Entertainment, surprises and fabulous decors on the Martello Tower roof, including scenes like the mysterious forest and the astronomical observatory.  Fun, stand-alone quiz to complete and a tour on the mini-train of the Joan of Arc Garden, much to the delight of little ones. Watch your back, soldiers may surprise you! A must-see for families.

October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. At Martello Tower 2 and the Joan of Arc Garden. Only in French. $3 / aged 5 and older. Free for children ages 4 and under.

  • Bewitching Tour (families). Family tour to triumph over the mysteries that plague the Park. Spells, charms and strange incantations included. Tales of different legends of the Plains of Abraham told by 18th century counterfeiter Louis Mallet or his wife, Marie. From Martello Tower 1 to the Joan of Arc Garden and Martello Tower 2, children will learn about the stories that haunt the Plains and the different means of protection used during these gloomy times.

October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Departure from Martello Tower 1. Reservation required. Only in French. $8 / ages 4 to 7, $11 / accompanying adult.

  • Spine-tingling Tales (families). Spellbinding tour where tales and legends are part of the rich and colourful history of the Plains of Abraham. Ghosts haunt the city, crimes are committed and the Plains are not spared their macabre past. Hear terrible stories told by Marie-Joseph Corriveau or her father, Joseph, and learn how to outmanoeuvre the spirits and find a hidden treasure. Thrills and chills guaranteed.

October 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. At Martello Tower 1. Reservation required. Only in French. $8 / ages 8 to 12, $11 / accompanying adult.

  • Ghoulish Walk (adults). Fascinating tour to discover the Plains under a more ghoulish light. There was a time when the Battlefields Park was the site of dark, illegal activities. Experience the grim history of the Park and the obscure legends surrounding it. Beware, you may run into a thief, a treasure hunter or other intriguing and mysterious personages from the past. Military discipline at the Martello towers, battlefield surgery, public hangings, the origins of Halloween and the black masses that took place on the Plains will be revealed to those who brave the darkness, lantern in hand.

October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29, 31, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Departure from Martello Tower 2. Reservation required. Only in French. $16 / adults (ages 13 and older).
