The Great Celebration of Nature on the Plains of Abraham hails the arrival of spring!

News release

May 8, 2018 – Québec – The National Battlefields Commission

The Great Celebration of Nature on the Plains of Abraham hails the arrival of spring on Sunday May 27 from 11 a.m. at the Plains of Abraham greenhouses and in the surrounding area. The National Battlefields Commission’s (NBC) Department Head – Green Environment will throw open the greenhouses’ doors and offer advice on plants and trees. Some 20 exhibitors will also be on hand to “discuss nature” with you. Our guest of honour, Albert Mondor, will be on the premises to give a conference and hold a workshop. Distribution of plants free of charge, petting zoo, entertainment, face painting and much more await you during this very popular horticultural rendezvous!

Quick facts

  • The park greenhouses ― among the oldest still active in Quebec ― grow annual, biennial and perennial plants used to beautify the Plains of Abraham and the Des Braves Park. Exceptionally during this open house, you will be able to see how tradition and state-of-the-art horticulture techniques go hand in hand.

  • Learn more about the NBC, its wood processing initiatives, security services and commemoration program. Staff will be pleased to offer information, answer your questions and listen to what you have to say with great interest.

  • Outside the greenhouses, representatives from several organizations will be on hand to share their knowledge on a variety of topics such as astronomy, urban ecology, the environment and green housing, and training and eco-nutrition… but to name a few. Our guest of honour, Albert Mondor, will hold a workshop on edible potted plants (11:30 a.m.) and a conference on ecological landscaping (2:30 p.m.).

  • Very popular with visitors! Some 1000 plants grown in the park’s greenhouses will be offered free of charge to the first visitors. The Association forestière des deux rives will offer 1000 plants of various species. Representatives from the Ministère de L’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles and the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs will also be on hand to exchange on current topics such as mines, insects and tree diseases, forest research and how trees and wood contribute to fighting climate change.

  • Young and old will have great fun visiting the petting zoo, sampling maple products and participating in games and face painting…and, of course, the traditional tree planting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in the presence of Yvan Lafleur, the goofy landscape designer.

  • Plan a picnic on the premises! Snack sur les Plaines par fastoche, (the mobile food bicycle), offers meals, snacks, coffee and juice for sale.

  • The Great Celebration of Nature on the Plains of Abraham on Sunday May 27 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Plains of Abraham greenhouses (corner of Briand and De Bernières, east of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec).
