World premiere at Berlin film fest for Montreal-based Eva Cvijanovic's and her NFB co-produced stop-motion short Hedgehog's Home

Montreal animator Eva Cvijanović’s stop-motion animated short Hedgehog’s Home (National Film Board of Canada/Bonobostudio) will have its world premiere in the Generation K‎plus competition of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, which takes place February 9 to 19, 2017.

Hedgehog’s Home is produced by Jelena Popović for the NFB and Vanja Andrijević for Croatia’s Bonobostudio, with Michael Fukushima as executive producer for the NFB’s world-renowned Animation Studio in Montreal. It’s the third NFB short by Eva, who previously directed The Kiss (2011) with the NFB’s Hothouse program for emerging animators, and has also completed work on the upcoming Survival of the Fittest, as part of the NFB’s new Naked Island Public Service Alert series.

Prior to the Berlin festival, Eva will be offering an Artist’s Talk about her animation process for Hedgehog’s Home at the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal, on January 27.

About the film

In a lush and lively forest lives a hedgehog, respected and envied by the other animals. However, his unwavering devotion to his home annoys and mystifies a quartet of insatiable beasts: a cunning fox, an angry wolf, a gluttonous bear and a muddy boar. When they set off to Hedgehog’s home to see just what’s so special about it, what they find amazes them―and sparks a prickly standoff.

This sumptuous and delicately choreographed stop-motion fable—made entirely of needled felt—is based on the classic story by Branko Ćopić, a writer from the former Yugoslavia. Hedgehog’s Home is a warm and universal tale for young and old that reminds us there truly is no place like home.

About the filmmaker

Eva Cvijanović is an animator and filmmaker focused on the storytelling potential of environments and character. Since graduating from Concordia University, she has produced and directed two independent films―Seasick (2013) and Once Upon a Many Time (2010)―in addition to her work with the NFB on The Kiss and Survival of the Fittest. Drawn to the immersive power of the tangible, Eva works with felted wool, watercolour and pastels while being equally fluent in digital media. Eva’s experience ranges from working on documentary and puppet films to videogames and more.
