LUC BOURDON’S LA PART DU DIABLE (NFB) WINS BEST FEATURE- OR MEDIUM-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY AT FICFA 2017. Film will be released in Quebec theatres starting February 16, 2018; trailer unveiled today.

Luc Bourdon’s La part du diable (The Devil’s Share), produced at the National Film Board of Canada by Colette Loumède, won in the Best Feature- or Medium-Length Documentary category at the Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie (FICFA) in Moncton on November 24. Composed of excerpts from NFB films that offer a new and distinctive perspective on Quebec’s Quiet Revolution of the 1970s, the film had its world premiere screening at Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinema, where it got a standing ovation in a packed theatre. In other good news, the feature doc will be released in several Quebec cities starting February 16, 2018, and audiences can view the trailer online as of today.

La part du diable (The Devil’s Share) by Luc Bourdon (102 min)

• For this unique, poetic film, director Luc Bourdon worked closely with editor Michel Giroux to explore a key period of Quebec’s history. Deftly selecting clips from nearly 200 films from the NFB archives, Bourdon crafts a compelling look at a decade in which Quebec society was profoundly transformed. The film delves into a number of important social issues of the period, such as women’s rights, rural migration, the October Crisis of 1970, environmental awareness, the secularization of education, and the rise of Quebec nationalism.
• The film follows a powerful narrative thread. Highly evocative excerpts from films by acclaimed directors, including Denys Arcand, Pierre Perrault, and Anne-Claire Poirier, highlight the powerful on-screen presence of a range of well-known personalities, such as René Lévesque, Robert Charlebois, Michel Tremblay, Pauline Julien, and Jean Chrétien. The film invites each of us to become a committed observer of these events, and to lend an attentive ear to its passionate, lyrical statement on this momentous decade. The result is an exhilarating blend of sounds and images, a moving experience that also will inspire viewers to reflect.
• Luc Bourdon is one of the key figures in the art of videography in Canada. Over a period of more than 25 years, he has created some 50 works in a variety of genres—documentary, drama, experimental—with a focus primarily on the themes of history and memory. These themes are central to both La part du diable and The Memories of Angels(2008), the other feature documentary he directed at the NFB.
