News release

September 19, 2018 – Vancouver – National Film Board of Canada

On September 19, Kevin D. A. Kurytnik and Carol Beecher’s award-winning animated short Skin for Skin (National Film Board of Canada/Fifteen Pound Pink Productions), a dark allegory of greed and spiritual reckoning set during the early days of the fur trade, begins streaming free of charge on NFB.ca, Facebook, and YouTube, as well as on Vimeo, where it’s been selected as a “Staff Pick.”

With nods to Melville and Coleridge, directors Carol Beecher and Kevin D.A. Kurytnik have created a visually stunning contemporary myth about the cost of arrogance and greed. In 1823, the Governor of the largest fur-trading company in the world travels across his Dominion, extracting ever-greater riches from the winter bounty of animal furs. In his brutal world of profit and loss, animals are slaughtered to the brink of extinction until the balance of power shifts, and the forces of nature exact their own terrible price.

Skin for Skin has picked up 10 awards to date, including the Special Distinction Award at the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival; the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film (Animation) at the Edmonton International Film Festival; Best Overall Short and Audience Favourite, Alberta Short at the Calgary International Film Festival; and Golden Sheaf Awards for Best of Fest and Best Animation at the Yorkton Film Festival.

Skin for Skin is produced by Bonnie Thompson (NFB) and Carol Beecher (Fifteen Pound Pink Productions), and executive produced by David Christensen for the NFB’s North West Studio, based in Edmonton.

Calgary writers/directors/animators Kevin D. A. Kurytnik and Carol Beecher have been exploring the art and craft of animation for 30 years. Since they formed their production company, Fifteen Pound Pink Productions, in 1994, they’ve collaborated on 15 animated works and garnered more than 20 awards.
