NFB modernization initiative will increase documentary and animation production budgets

News release

Montreal, April 4, 2024 – In the context of a constantly changing and evolving industry, the NFB is undertaking a major modernization initiative that’s expected to lead to a significant increase in funds budgeted for production. Based on current funding levels, this increase translates into approximately $5 million in additional money allocated directly to the production of animated films and documentaries.

By reorganizing its resources and improving its practices and management tools, the NFB has begun a process that will move it into the future while keeping it aligned with the realities of today’s production and work methods.

For the NFB, continuing to innovate in all of its activities remains a critical goal. Directors will continue to develop their projects in a highly creative environment, and teams will meet with filmmakers and new talent across the country. The organization is committed to fulfilling its mission by respecting its commitments to equity, diversity and inclusion, in particular with respect to Indigenous and BPOC communities, as well as official-language minorities.

This modernization process will entail the departure of 55 employees and the creation of 23 new positions.

The NFB wishes to acknowledge the work and the dedication of its staff, especially those who have been impacted by this modernization initiative. Over the nearly 85 years of its existence, it is the collective efforts of its employees that have led the NFB to its extraordinary success as a unique production and distribution house.
