The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Regional Minister for PEI and MP for Egmont, today announced that the Government of Canada has awarded a contract of $963,763 through a public tendering process to Island Coastal Services from PEI for a major harbour infrastructure project at West Point, PEI. Work on the harbour is expected to commence soon.

In the Village of Valemount, the federal government partnered with the British Columbia Conservation Foundation again to continue to restore salmon spawning habitat along Swift Creek. The Government of Canada has partnered with the Halton-Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship to undertake tree planting improvements along Caledon Creek. Member of Parliament, David Tilson, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, highlighted today the federal government's investment in the Caledon Creek tree-planting program. Through the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program (RFCPP), the Halton-Peel Woodlands and Wildlife Stewardship will receive up to $5,500 to support the conservation of fish habitat in Caledon.

The Canadian Coast Guard and the Ontario Provincial Police have warned that icebreaking operations will begin in various areas of the Great Lakes as seasonal conditions change.
December 18, 2014 - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Canadian Coast Guard Atlantic Region has closed its seasonal search and rescue stations in Lark Harbour and Port aux Choix, along with seasonal stations in Prince Edward Island and northern New Brunswick.
The $7.8 million investment will be used to purchase 185 new-generation year-round buoys and to deploy them between Montréal and Québec City. These lighted buoys will increase navigational safety on the fluvial section. The buoys will be lifted every two years rather than twice a year, as is currently the case, which will increase service efficiency. They are specially designed to withstand the harsh, icy conditions of the St. Lawrence.

Atlantic salmon fisheries have been an important part of our Canadian social heritage for more than 150 years. Spawning in over 1000 rivers in eastern Canada, Atlantic salmon are actively fished for Food, Social and Ceremonial purposes by dozens of First Nations and Aboriginal organizations and recreational fisheries in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. These fisheries contribute over $100 million to the Canadian economy and support up to 3,500 jobs in eastern Canada.

Today, the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, along with Tilly O'Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, announced the creation of a new Ministerial Advisory Committee on Atlantic salmon to help determine the course of action to address low returns of Atlantic salmon on the East coast.
