Minister Shea releases the final results of the Atlantic Lobster Sustainability Measures Program for Prince Edward Island

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today the Government of Canada has provided more than $11 million to PEI lobster organizations under the Atlantic Lobster Sustainability Measures (ALSM) program since 2010. As a result, the number of traps being fished by active fishermen decreased by roughly 10,000 and 68 licences were retired across the province, representing an additional 18,500 traps.

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, and Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that agreements have been finalized with the new operator of the Experimental Lakes Area, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD ELA Inc.) These agreements mean that the federal government has fulfilled its commitments to ensuring that research at the Experimental Lakes Area can continue under a new operator.
