Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, is marking the United States presidential inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama with a statement and a Youth Dialogue at Rideau Hall. This event of historical significance will set the tone for a discussion with 125 youth about participating in building a better world. The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced revisions to the regulations of the Memorial Cross, a memento granted since 1919 to the loved ones of deceased Canadian Forces (CF) personnel. The families of all CF members who have died, or die, as a result of military service after October 6, 2001 will now be recognized by the grant of up to three Memorial Crosses. This much welcome change ensures that all service-related deaths, which occurred since the beginning of the CF's involvement in the international campaign against terrorism, are duly recognized and treated equitably.

OTTAWA - Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird, announced today that phase II of the Marine Transportation Security Clearance Program has been successfully implemented on schedule, as of December 15, 2008. This program enhances marine and port security by requiring background security checks for specified port workers.
