CLERMONT, Que — Claude Drouin, Secretary of State responsible for Canada Economic Development, today announced, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, the transfer of ownership of the Charlevoix aerodrome from Transport Canada to the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Charlevoix-Est.
"I congratulate the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Charlevoix-Est for taking part in a new era of airport management in Canada," said Mr. Drouin. "Taking over the ownership of the Charlevoix aerodrome will place the municipality in a better position to respond quickly to the needs of the people in the area."
The Charlevoix aerodrome is a facility identified as one of 30 Small airports having no scheduled passenger service and serving local needs. Under the National Airports Policy, announced in July 1994, local interests are being offered until March 31, 2002 the opportunity to assume ownership of small airports.
In addition to the transfer of ownership, Transport Canada will contribute $50,000 to the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Charlevoix-Est for airport operations, as outlined in the National Airports Policy for the transfer of small airports.
"The National Airports Policy enables communities to take greater advantage of their airport, reduce costs and attract new and different types of business," said Mr. Collenette. "Making better use of transportation infrastructure in this manner will ultimately provide a boost to trade, tourism and job creation."
Negotiations to transfer the Charlevoix aerodrome began in September 1996, following the signing of a Letter of Intent by the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Charlevoix-Est and Transport Canada.
Transport Canada continues to regulate the safe provision of air navigation facilities and services across the country. The department also continues to ensure safety and security at Canadian airports through aviation regulation and airport certification processes.
