No. H011/02For release - February 5, 2002
OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette today announced that the ITS Society of Canada will receive $250,000 in funding so that it can continue to act as the department's primary private-sector Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) advisor and partner. The funding is in addition to the $500,000 provided by Transport Canada to the ITS Society of Canada since 1999, when the Society was first contracted by the department in this capacity.
The ITS Society of Canada is a not-for-profit, incorporated partnership of private and public sector professionals charged with promoting ITS applications and strengthening the Canadian ITS industry.
"The Government of Canada is committed to the implementation of a comprehensive ITS strategy," said Mr. Collenette. "By continuing to work with the ITS Society of Canada, we can help to make Canada's transportation system safer, more efficient, productive and environmentally responsible."
Intelligent Transportation Systems include advanced systems for: traffic management, traveller information and vehicle control, commercial vehicle and fleet management, public transit, and rural transportation. They also include the application of advanced technologies, including information processing, communications, and sensing and control, that enhance Canada's transportation system.
The commitment for this funding was first announced in November 1999 as part of the Government of Canada's Intelligent Transportation Systems Plan for Canada: En Route to Intelligent Mobility. The plan sets out the Government of Canada's strategy for stimulating the development and deployment of ITS across urban and rural Canada.
"This funding demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to innovative advances in transportation technology," added Mr. Collenette.
