No. Q006/02For release - March 14, 2002
CUMBERLAND (Ontario) — The Honourable Don Boudria, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, today announced the transfer of the ownership of the Cumberland ferry wharf from Transport Canada to the City of Ottawa for the nominal sum of one dollar.
"As the new owner, the City of Ottawa will be in a position to ensure an efficient operation of this ferry wharf and to better respond to local needs by diversifying its use, "said Minister Boudria.
Under the terms of this transfer, Transport Canada has undertaken a project to make repairs to the wharf at a cost of $1,169,000 funded by the department's Port Divestiture Program. Work started last September and will be finalized this spring.
The Cumberland wharf is used for the ferry service between Cumberland, Ontario, and Masson, Quebec. It is located on the South Shore of the Ottawa River, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Ottawa.
"This agreement enables the Government of Canada to complete another port facility transfer under its Port Divestiture Program. It also allows the City of Ottawa to acquire the property of this ferry wharf and take charge of its management and development," added Minister Collenette.
Transport Canada's Port Divestiture Program was established in 1996, as part of the National Marine Policy, with the objective of transferring regional/local port sites to other interests. In some cases, ports are being transferred as operating ports; in other cases, Crown land and facilities are being transferred to interested parties for other uses.
