ILES DE LA MADELEINE, QC — On behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, Georges Farrah, MP for Bonaventure-Gaspé-Iles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok, today announced that a $4,651,729 contract was awarded to Gély Construction of Quebec City for a major project to rebuild paved operating surfaces and undertake related work at Iles de la Madeleine Airport.
"This major investment is part of the Government of Canada's commitment to support remote communities, whose transportation infrastructures are of utmost importance for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods", said Mr. Collenette.
The improvement project includes the repaving of the two runways, the airport apron and taxiways, the rebuilding of the public carpark as well as the replacement of airport signs and a number of navigation visual aids. This two-year project will start this year to be completed in 2003.
"This project, which represents an important investment, supports local employment and economic activities while allowing the restauration of an essential transport facility that will serve this community well for many years to come ", added Mr. Collenette.
The Iles de la Madeleine Aiport is in the category of remote airports, under the terms of the National Airports Policy. It is a major gateway for the transportation of passengers and goods to and from Iles de la Madeleine. In 2000, some 29,660 passengers used the Iles de la Madeleine Airport and there were 5,927 aircraft mouvements.
Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
