No. A011/02For release - September 13, 2002
Moncton, NB — Transport Minister David Collenette, together with Labour Minister and MP (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe) Claudette Bradshaw today announced that the Moncton Airport has been provided with the official status of international airport and that accordingly, the name of the airport has been officially changed to "Greater Moncton International Airport". This will allow the Greater Moncton Airport Authority to better promote the airport as an international destination that provides the required level of services - such as customs, as well as agriculture and health inspection services - that are associated with the international status.
"The Greater Moncton International Airport is a growing and vibrant airport that plays an essential role in New Brunswick's transportation system," said Mr. Collenette. "It will help consolidate Greater Moncton International Airport's position as a major engine of growth for all of south-eastern New Brunswick."
"This announcement, just in time for the opening of the new Air Terminal Building next month, is great news for the Greater Moncton Area, and indeed for the whole province," said Mrs. Bradshaw. "This airport is becoming a world-class facility where the people of greater Moncton can proudly greet passengers from all over the world."
Transport Canada has already taken the appropriate steps to inform the domestic and international community of the new name by publishing it in various aeronautical publications including the Canada Air Pilot, the Canada Flight Supplement, the Designated Airspace Handbook, and aeronautical charts.
Operational, managerial and developmental control of the airport was transferred from the Government of Canada to the Greater Moncton Airport Authority in September 1997. Under the National Airports Policy, announced in July 1994, Greater Moncton International Airport is designated as part of the National Airports System (NAS) and an essential component of Canada's air transportation network.
