Stephenville, NF — Bill Matthews, MP for Burin-St. George's, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, today announced the awarding of a contract in the amount of $147,063 to Brook Enterprises Inc. of Corner Brook, for wharf repairs at Stephenville.
The work will involve encasing 40 reinforced concrete piles at the Stephenville Public Wharf. The project, which is part of Transport Canada's ongoing port maintenance program, is a continuation of repairs done in 2000-2001 when structural encasements were installed on 50 piles. The work will begin immediately and is scheduled to be completed by mid-December.
"This wharf plays an important role in the economy of the Stephenville Area and this work will ensure that it remains in safe operating condition for the many clients who rely upon it," said Mr. Matthews.
Presently, the wharf serves the local pulp and paper industry, as well as various cargo vessels, tankers, tugs, barges and government vessels.
"The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that the wharf facilities in Stephenville continue to meet the required safety and operating standards until they are transferred to local interests under the National Marine Policy," said Mr. Collenette .
Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 budget and is therefore built into the current fiscal framework.
