Transport Canada Issues Type Certificate to RJ-900 Regional Jet

OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the successful type certification of the Bombardier RJ-900 Regional Jet on September 9, 2002.
"Certification plays an important role in both the airworthiness of aircraft and in enhancing the safety of the travelling public," said Mr. Collenette. "With this type certification, the Canadian aerospace industry, one of the largest in the world, will be able to benefit from continued growth in domestic and international sales opportunities."
The issuance of the type certificate has been made possible by a team of Transport Canada and Bombardier specialists working together over a three-year period to establish that all relevant airworthiness design standards have been met.
The Transport Canada type certificate forms the basis for the acceptance of the RJ-900 by other authorities worldwide. This will allow Bombardier to market the RJ-900 to the international aviation community.
The RJ-900, which is powered by two General Electric CF-34-8C5 engines, is a development of the Bombardier RJ-700 that was certified by Transport Canada in December 2000. The longer fuselage of the RJ-900 has a 90-passenger capacity versus the 70-passenger capacity of the RJ-700. The aircraft is manufactured at the Bombardier facility in Mirabel, Quebec.
The department will continue to work with Bombardier in support of U.S. Federal Aviation Authority and European Joint Aviation Authorities certification of the RJ-900.
