Project to Add a Berthing Structure to Les Escoumins Wharf

LES ESCOUMINS (Quebec) — Transport Minister David Collenette today announced that work is to start in April 2003 on a project to add a temporary berthing structure to Les Escoumins wharf.
"This investment by the Government of Canada confirms our commitment to support regional communities where transportation facilities are required for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, " said Mr. Collenette.
This project includes the addition of four structures, called dolphins, each consisting of a bollard on a concrete block embedded on top of three piles. A new gangway will rest on the stable portion of the existing wharf and extend over three of the dolphins. Improvements will also be made to the loading ramp and to the fendering systems. The structures will be fitted with all the required equipment for the berthing and the safe operation of the ferry.
Compagnie de navigation des Basques has used the Les Escoumins wharf as the northern terminus for its ferry service to Trois Pistoles on the south shore of the St Lawrence.
Les Escoumins wharf is a local/regional port under the terms of the National Marine Policy and is owned and operated by Transport Canada.
Federal funding of this initiative was provided for in the federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
