Canada and Vietnam Conclude First Air Transport Agreement

OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette and Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham today announced the conclusion of Canada's first air transport agreement with the Government of Vietnam for scheduled air services between the two countries.
"Today's agreement will permit the development of this growing bilateral air travel market by the airlines of Canada and Vietnam," said Mr. Collenette. "The development of direct air services will benefit passengers, shippers and the airlines of the two countries."
"We are pleased to have reached this agreement during the year that marks the 30th anniversary of Canada-Vietnam diplomatic relations," said Mr. Graham. "We hope that this agreement, and the opportunities it affords for travel between our two countries, will further strengthen bilateral ties."
The agreement provides for the operation of code sharing services to and from any cities in Canada and Vietnam, under liberal conditions regarding the frequency of services and the setting of prices. (Code sharing is a type of air service in which an airline uses the flights of other airlines for transportation over at least a portion of the passenger's routing.) The agreement includes strong aviation safety and security provisions.
As a result of this agreement, Air Canada and Vietnam Airlines intend to initiate code sharing services at an early stage on each others flights, as well as for some flights of their respective third country partner airlines.
