Major Improvement Works to Kuujjuaq Airport

News Release

No. Q008/03For release - July 3, 2003
KUUJJUAQ (Quebec) — Guy St-Julien, MP for Abitibi - James Bay - Nunavik, today announced, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, that a $2,465,487 contract has been awarded to Mont-Sterling Pats Parts to carry major improvement works to the main runway at Kuujjuaq airport.
"This major investment in Kuujjuaq Airport is part of the Government of Canada's commitment to support infrastructure in remote communities that is essential to the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods," said Mr. St-Julien.
The main purpose of the project is to level the graded areas of the main runway. The work will begin this summer and will end in the fall of 2004.
Under the National Airports Policy, Kuujjuaq Airport has been designated a remote airport. It is owned by Transport Canada and has been operated by the Kativik Regional Government since September 1996. Under an agreement, Transport Canada provides funds to cover the airport operating costs.
Kuujjuaq Airport is essential for the transportation of passengers and goods in Nunavik. It supports regularly scheduled air passenger service for communities along Ungava Bay and the Hudson Strait.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
