Contract for Major Improvement Work to Waskaganish Airport

WASKAGANISH (Quebec) — Guy St-Julien, MP for Abitibi - James Bay - Nunavik, today announced, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, that a $1,359,500 contract has been awarded to a consortium made up of Blackned Construction and Development Inc. of Waskaganish and Michel Lacroix Construction Inc. of Maniwaki for major improvement work at Waskaganish Airport.
"This major investment at Waskaganish Airport further demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to support remote communities whose transportation infrastructures are of utmost importance for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods," said Mr. St-Julien.
The improvement work includes refilling the gravel runway, taxiway and apron, restoring the access road and replacing the airport signage. The restoration work will begin in September 2003 and should last one month.
"This major improvement means that this region can benefit from the economic activities related to the reconstruction project as well as from the renewed transportation facilities that will serve this community well for many years to come", added Minister Collenette.
Under the National Airports Policy, Waskaganish Airport has been designated a remote airport. It is owned by Transport Canada and is operated by the Waskaganish Band Council.
Waskaganish Airport is essential for the transportation of passengers and goods in James Bay. It supports regularly scheduled air passenger service for communities in that area.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
