New marine terminal at the port of Cap aux Meules

Cap aux Meules (Québec) - Georges Farrah, MP for Bonaventure-Gaspé-Iles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok, today announced, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, the awarding of a $877,700 contract to Construction C.E.G. Inc.of Matane for the first phase of a project to build a new marine terminal at the port of Cap aux Meules ferry wharf.
"This project, estimated at some $1.6 million, means that this region can benefit from the economic activities related to the reconstruction project as well as from the renewed transportation facilities that will serve this community well for many years to come," said Mr.Farrah.
The first phase of the project, which includes the construction of a shelter for travellers, will start in September 2003 and will be completed in spring 2004. The second phase, to be carried out in 2004-2005, will consist of renovating the parking area and demolishing the existing terminal.
"This major investment in the Magdalen Islands further demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to support remote communities whose transportation infrastructures are of utmost importance for the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods," added Mr.Collenette.
The port of Cap aux Meules is owned by Transport Canada and is classified as a remote port under the terms of the National Marine Policy. It is the main gateway for passengers and goods to and from Magdalen Islands. The Cap aux Meules marine terminal is located at the ferry wharf built in 1998 to accommodate the new MV Madeleine ferry linking Cap aux Meules to Souris, Prince Edward Island.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
