No. H112/03For release October 7, 2003 APPOINTMENT TO NORTH FRASER PORT AUTHORITY OTTAWA -- Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the appointment of Art Cowie of Vancouver, B.C., to the board of directors of the North Fraser Port Authority. "Mr. Cowie's experience in community planning will serve him well as he takes up his duties on the board of directors of the port authority,¿ said Mr. Collenette. "I am pleased that he has agreed to take on this responsibility on the board of the North Fraser Port Authority.¿ Mr. Cowie currently serves as vice-chair and president of Sungold Entertainment Corporation, and as president of Eikos Planning Incorporated. He holds a bachelor of science degree in forestry from the University of New Brunswick, a certificate of landscape architecture from University College London, England and a master of science, community and regional planning from the University of British Columbia. He has worked in the United Kingdom and in Australia on landscape projects. He has also served as chairman and commissioner of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, and as alderman of the city of Vancouver. The North Fraser Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to manage North Fraser Port, effective July 1, 1999, under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the North Fraser Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders. The Port of North Fraser, located in Greater Vancouver, has direct access to the Strait of Georgia, and is near the Vancouver International Airport, arterial roadways and railways.
