No. H110/03For release October 3, 2003TRANSPORT MINISTER PARTICIPATESIN OPENING CELEBRATION OF THEOTTAWA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINALOTTAWA -- Transport Minister David Collenette today congratulated the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport Authority (OMCIAA) on the opening of the new Ottawa International Airport terminal building. "I would like to recognize the work of all those who made this fantastic new facility a reality. Since participating in the ground breaking in 2001, I have watched the expansion of this airport,¿ said Mr. Collenette. "This state-of-the-art terminal was completed under budget and ahead of schedule ¿ making this achievement even more remarkable.¿Ottawa International Airport is designated as part of the National Airports System (NAS) and an essential component of Canada's air transportation network. It was transferred to the OMCIAA in 1997 pursuant to the National Airports Policy (1994) that calls for the transfer of the operation and management of NAS airports to Canadian Airport Authorities made up of community interests. Authorities are incorporated consistent with a set of principles that ensure a high degree of accountability to the public.Canadian Airport Authorities are not-for-profit corporations headed by boards of directors nominated by federal, provincial and municipal governments, and by participating organizations such as chambers of commerce, boards of trade, and other interest groups."It is clear that Canada's major airport divestiture initiative is one of the most successful commercialization undertakings in the world,¿ added Mr. Collenette.
